These tables do not cover all possible locations PCs might find themselves in during the course of a game, but you can use these tables as models for generating additional encounter tables of your own design.

Note that each of the following tables has been assigned an Average CR—this indicates the average difficulty of the encounters that can be rolled up on the table. A CR 4 encounter table works well when challenging a group of 4th level PCs, for example. Caravan : A caravan trading with locals or passing on to more profitable lands. Such caravans are often well guarded and suspicious of traders. These merchants brave the dangers of the road on their way to distant markets. This band includes porters and traders and are guarded by 2d4 2nd-level human warriors. They are generally fairly well prepared to fend off small bands of common bandits or other minor dangers.

Such encounters usually consist of soldiers in the employ of the city or in a police function and one or two of which will be a captain or commander 2 if more than 8 guards, 3 if more than Leaders are of 2nd to 5th level fighters. City Official : Such encounters will are with some minor bureaucrat such as a tax collector, customs officer, or magistrate. Rarely, such encounters are with a major official, such as prominent steward, alderman, justice, chamberlain, or major magistrate.

Major officials are always accompanied by guards 1st level fighters and one fighter 2nd to 5th level. Curfew Breakers : Rowdy citizens occasionally carouse about the city after dark. Such encounters might be with tradesmen or merchants drunk on their way home, or foolish brash youths, or any other everyday citizen out and about. Drunk : A raucously singing group of stumbling pirates, an angry wino looking for a brawl, or a jovial but down-on-his-luck drunk just looking for a free drink stumbles into the PCs.

In the former case the type of character found drunk should be diced for: When an encounter with a drunk occurs, reaction for the latter will dictate what is said to the party.

Such an encounter might involve young toughs up to no good, thugs shaking down their neighbors, or even heavies in the employ of a local crimelord. These encounters can range in CR from very low—requiring only a little sword rattling to disperse some skittish vandals—to very high, depending on your needs and situation. A huge nest has fallen from a tree on the side of the road. The strange-looking eggs within seem on the verge of hatching. A dwarf falls from the sky onto the road with a splat.

Did a creature drop it, was he launched into the air, did he fall from a floating fortress? It is protected by a magical ward, but what is triggered when entering the garden? A smiling roadside merchant roasts rats, frogs, and squirrels on sticks. He offers a bite to the PCs. The horse is fitted with an elegant but empty saddle. Who does it belong to? Do the PCs take it?

The two room home holds numerous open cups of the same pungent liquid.

The slightest affirmative answer causes Steve to give a whistle, and a huge swarm of ravenous locusts suddenly manifests. A band of orcs runs toward the party. They look over their shoulders and try to run through the party. Three types of meat hang on a spit over a campfire. It is clear that it is three types of humanoids that hang over the flames. A well-spoken bugbear wearing fine studded leather armor is trapped under a fallen tree. He begs the party to come to his aid.

However, a mysterious visitor to the area is offering an equal reward for keeping it safe. There have been threats against a local noble. They require an escort to get them safely through the mysterious forest to the next larger town. Goblin hovels are popping up throughout the woods. A mischievous Boggle has taken up residence in a small valley where locals pick herbs and plants for potions and magical components.

Though the pranks the Boggle has been employing have been mostly harmless, things are changing…. Lizardfolk have been seen carving strange runes into the trees of the forest. No one has been able to decipher their meaning. The trees! A door has appeared in the base of a mighty willow tree. The door has been locked for centuries, but one morning the door is wide open. Is it an invitation to enter?

Generated from the Feywild Locations roll of 6 and Feywild Levels roll of 11 below. The Feywild is a realm of eternal twilight, a spectacular reflection of the Material Plane. It brings visions of sparkling faerie lights, idyllic forest glades, sinister black bogs and skull-like mountains. Encounters could take place at a bridge of vines, a tor topped with crystal spires or a shimmering pool that attracts fireflies.

Home of the fey courts, there are legends of mortals being lost in the feywild for years, centuries or forever. They are home to proud seelie sprites, cunning unseelie satyrs, scheming hags and hungry fomorians. At the lake bottom is a planar portal 6 A clearing of recently felled trees. The stumps and fallen trees are weeping tears of sap. Many redcap mushrooms grow here 7 The bones of a giant skeleton are partly submerged in mud and vines. Curses and disturbing carvings cover the bones.

Those eating the fruit at the grove are blessed. It is claimed by a proud fey noble 9 A hillside covered in several mushroom rings. Each ring is a different color and undamaged by the large herd beasts roaming here 10 A withered hedge covered in big red berries.

Some are delicious and some are poisonous. Many rodents live in the hedge 11 A reed-filled stream burbles through a green pasture. Faerie lights flit in the water and grass. Currently it is raining. Many fat fireflies investigate the garden 13 Towering spires of crystal grow from the moss-covered ground. Thunder and lightning herald an incoming storm. A rare herb grows here, sought for curses and poisons 15 An overgrown brook flows through a high-sided valley.

Chalk giants are carved on one side, one has a shrine to a power of the hunt 16 The edge of a sinister black bog marked by several moss-covered obelisks.

Eyes watch from the bog and a horn sounds in the distance 17 Above the surrounding forest towers a mighty oak.

For every 5 points the result of the check exceeds the DC, the fire is detected an additional feet away. Creatures that breathe smoke must succeed on a DC 14 Constitution saving throw or take 7 2d6 fire damage and become poisoned for 1 minute. A stretch of grassland remains ablaze for 1d4 x 10 minutes before burning out. The satyr is quite intoxicated regardless of the time of day and has the poisoned condition.

The elves guard against intruders into their lands. A small patrol of watchmen or inexperienced soldiers is patrolling an ancient road. After hours alone in the woods, they are jumpy and nervous.
